Build Strong Readers Sound by Sound
This Word Chaining Activity Pack gives K–2 students structured, scaffolded practice in phonemic awareness and phonics — one sound change at a time. Students listen for, identify, and manipulate sounds in words, building the encoding and decoding flexibility that strong readers need.
Designed as a K–2 ESL and intervention template, this resource is ideal for any structured literacy or Science of Reading-aligned classroom.
What's Included (8 printable pages)
✅ 1 Word Chain Printable — change only the first sound in each box to make a new word
✅ 1 Word Chain Sheet — change any sound (beginning, middle, or end) to make a new word
✅ 3 Guided Word Chain Pages — focused on initial sound substitution with medial and ending sounds pre-filled, covering short vowels a, e, and i (hat → at, pet → et, big → ig)
✅ 2 Additional Vowel Practice Pages — for short vowels o and u, with medial and final sounds left blank for extended practice
✅ 1 Blank Word Chain Page — three columns of empty boxes for students to create their own word chains independently
How It Works
Students begin with scaffolded support — initial sounds only, with vowel chunks provided — and progress toward full independence as they manipulate beginning, middle, and ending sounds to build new words. The open-ended blank page lets advanced students create their own chains, making this resource truly differentiated.
